H.E. Ambassador Dafallah Haj Ali, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, received this morning, Monday, November 13, 2023, Mr. Graham Maitland, Director of the East Africa Division in the Department of Political and Peace-building Affairs at the United Nations. The two sides discussed all aspects related to the work of the United Nations Interim Force in Abyei (UNISFA).
The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirmed the government’s cooperation with the United Nations and UNICEF within the framework of the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) and the June 2011 agreement, stressing that implementing what the agreement stipulated in forming joint mechanisms at the police, administration and legislative council levels is the best way to address the situation in Abyei as well. Cooperation confirmed Good agreement with the Government of South Sudan and the United Nations on this matter.
Mr. Maitland explained the United Nations’ keenness to implement UNICEF’s mandate in its tasks, address challenges in the field of the rule of law, the proliferation of weapons, the seasonal movement of herders, and avoid manifestations of instability, and stressed the importance of respecting previous agreements signed between the Government of the Republic of Sudan and the Republic of South Sudan, as He thanked the government for providing the necessary administrative facilities to UNICEF.
