DEPARTMENT OF MEDIA AND SPOKESPERSON
Press Release
On the morning of August 9, 2024, His Excellency Ambassador Hussein Awad Ali, Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, met with Dr. Kim Haroon, Secretary-General of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), at the ASEAN headquarters in Jakarta.
The Minister provided a detailed explanation of the developments in Sudan, addressing the dimensions of the war waged by the Janjaweed militia against the Sudanese people and the scale of the conspiracy, which involves international and regional collusion. He explained that the Sudanese Armed Forces are fulfilling their role in defending the nation and its citizens, having managed to break the hard power of the rebellion, which brought in thousands of mercenaries from neighboring and distant countries.
The Minister affirmed that the Sudanese government is open to peace and considers the Jeddah forum as the basis for any negotiations, especially since it resulted in an agreement under which the militia is supposed to evacuate civilian sites. He emphasized that the implementation of this agreement is the prerequisite for moving to the next step in any negotiations.
The Minister also discussed possible areas of cooperation with ASEAN in various fields, particularly in training and capacity building.
For his part, the ASEAN Secretary-General welcomed the Minister and expressed his awareness of the situation in Sudan. He emphasized the importance of the media in covering events and adopting the correct narrative. He also stated that ASEAN is an organization committed to achieving peace and is working towards that goal, expressing his hope that the conflict in Sudan will end peacefully. He noted that prolonging the war only increases the suffering of the people and exacerbates the damage to service facilities and infrastructure.
